Tanzania Visa Information & Advice – Blue Monkey Expeditions

Planning a safari in Tanzania or a trip to Zanzibar? You’ll need a visa to enter the country. Here’s a guide to help you understand the process of obtaining your Tanzania visa. Please note, Blue Monkey Expeditions is not a visa purchasing service, but we aim to provide useful information to make your journey easier.

How to Apply for a Tanzania Visa

There are two main methods for obtaining a visa for Tanzania: applying online or applying upon arrival. Each method has its pros and cons, and we’ve outlined them below to help you decide what’s best for your trip.

Tanzania Visa Costs

  • British citizens: The visa fee is £40 if applied in advance.
  • At the airport in Tanzania: It costs $50 USD or €50. Since €50 is worth more than $50, we recommend bringing USD to save money.

Our Advice

To make your trip smoother, we recommend applying for your Tanzania visa online before you depart. This will save you time and stress upon arrival, particularly if you’re traveling in high season.

Important Notes:

  1. Parent traveling alone with a child: If only one parent is traveling with a child, the other parent must provide a written, signed document in English giving permission for the child to travel. Make sure you have this document before arriving in Tanzania.
  2. Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date from Tanzania. Be sure to check this well in advance.

Whether you apply for a visa online or upon arrival, Blue Monkey Expeditions is here to guide you every step of the way. We’ll send you an information pack with everything you need to prepare for your trip, so you don’t have to search for it on your own. Safe travels!

Online Visa Application

We highly recommend applying for your Tanzania visa online before you travel. It’s quick, convenient, and saves time when you arrive. You can apply via the official Tanzania government website: https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa.

Please note, as of January 2, 2020, visas can no longer be obtained through Tanzanian embassies.

Visa on Arrival

If you prefer to apply for a visa upon arrival, here’s what to expect:

  • Where to apply: There’s a designated visa counter at Tanzanian airports.
  • Waiting time: Processing time depends on how busy the airport is. Even if you’re among the first passengers off the plane, you may need to wait 20 minutes or more, and during peak season, it can take over an hour.
  • High season considerations: During peak travel seasons, long wait times are common. This could be a challenge, especially after a long flight or if you’re traveling with children.
